Who we are

Land Governance Think Tank

A Land governance Think Tank anchored within The University of Nairobi, Faculty of Law, which aims to inform equitable, evidence-based land governance through academic scholarship, policy engagement, and capacity-building. By fostering dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and local communities, we strive to address the challenges facing land governance. These include the persistent contestations over public, private, and community land tenure systems, ambiguities in institutional mandates between the National Land Commission (NLC), counties, and the national government, and the complexities arising from devolution and overlapping administrative jurisdictions.

Our work seeks to generate solutions that promote transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in Kenya’s land sector

Vision for Transformative Land Governance

The 2025 Professor H.W.O. Okoth-Ogendo Annual Distinguished Lecture, held at the Faculty of Law on 24th April 0225, brought together leading scholars and practitioners to reflect on the state of land governance in Africa and celebrate the legacy of one of its most influential legal minds. The event, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and European Union (EU) under the Digital Land Governance Programme, was a resounding call to reimagine land law as dynamic, inclusive, and responsive to contemporary realities.

When Land Meets Life

Amboseli Socio-Legal Regime Research Project

This project was undertaken as part of the Fostering Thought Leadership and Evidence-led Research on Land Governance Program of the University of Nairobi under the larger Digital Land Governance Program of the FAO and EU. It was carried out by a team of 16 undergraduate student researchers and three student media practitioners, all driven by the shared aim of interrogating the socio-legal realities shaping the Amboseli ecosystem. Guided by three thematic areas, land governance and conservation, access to justice and emerging opportunities such as carbon credits.

The study sought to provide evidence-based insights that can inform both scholarship and policy
